The Smelly Alley Fish Company | | | There's 10% off on these uncooked prawns this week. Fresh giant prawns from Madagascar (note the size of the £1 coin) are easy to cook and look tremendous! Just bake, grill or fry until they turn red (ideal for the barbeque when summer comes). The middle-sized prawns are tigers, they are farmed and frozen. Just boil or bake, they are ideal for fish stews, just bake then while the stew is cooking and lay them on the top just before your serve it. The smallest prawns are great cooked in a wok with olive oit and lots of garlic, eat with your fingers, but make sure you provide a bowl of water for everyone (float a slice of lemon in it) and lots of napkins!!!

| The Smelly Alley Fish Company was voted Reading Retailer of the Year a couple of months ago. A great accolade for us! The awards have only been running for two years, the winner last year was Marks and Spencer, this year The Smelly Alley Fish Company! The awards were presented by The Apprentice's Nick Hewer at The Royal Berkshire Conference Centre at the Madejski Stadium. Reading is the only town in Britain, apart from London, that has these awards. Well done, Kevin, Gareth and Ricky!

Why "The Smelly Alley Fish Company"? We're in a street that has had food shops in it for hundreds of years. In the 1600s it had an open sewer running down its length, so it became known as Smelly Alley. Now there is just one fishmonger, one greengrocer and one butcher, and we are in Reading, Berkshire.
Don't fall for that old chestnut that fish is best from coastal fishmongers. They don't have the variety of fish that we do, and what do they do when the fishing boats don't go out or the weather is too bad for fishing? We are centrally located and can get fish from Newlyn or the Shetlands 12 hours after it has been caught!
